Superoxide dismutase and catalase activities in the liver and muscle of barbel (Barbus barbus) and its intestinal parasite (Pomphoryinchus laevis) from the Danube river, Serbia

Abstract: The activities of total superoxide dismutase (Tot-SOD), manganese-containing superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD), copper zinc containing superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD) and catalase (CAT) protein concentration, as well as protein and SOD electrophoretic profiles in the liver and muscle of barbel (Barbus barbus) and its intestinal parasite Pomphoryinchus laevis from the river Danube, within the suburban area of Belgrade, Serbia (the stretch between Višnjica and Grocka) in spring and summer were investigated. Specifi… Show more

“…The antioxidant enzymes, catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) have been proposed as the key component of a cellular defense system against reactive oxygen species [72] and major biomarkers of gastric oxidative stress [73]. These antioxidant enzymes are natural protective barriers against lipid peroxidation that prevent the generation of hydroxyl radicals and protect the cellular constituents from oxidative damage [74].…”

“…Catalase catalyzes the reduction of hydrogen peroxide, thereby protecting cells against oxidative damage. 22 In our rats and mice, oxidative stress, as measured malondialdehyde catalase levels, was more pronounced in animals given wood shavings as bedding. Ammonia production is very high in wood shavings compared with other bedding materials.…”
