Superoxide dismutase activity in some strains of lactobacilli: Induction by manganese.

Abstract: Dialyzed cell-free extract of lactobacilli was found to contain superoxide dismutase activity by using a test system in which superoxide ion is generated by xanthine oxidase. The specific activities of Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 4356, Lactobacillus murinus ATCC 35020, Lactobacillus acidophilus CRL 358, Lactobacillus plantarum ATCC 8014, Lactobacillus casei CRL 431, Lactobacillus plantarum CRL 353, Lactobacillus fermentum ATCC 9338, Lactobacillus buchneri NCDO 110, and Lactobacillus fermentum CRL 251 were b… Show more

“…Also encoded were a number of amino acid decarboxylases, such as an ornithine decarboxylase (La996), which has already been shown to play a role in acid tolerance (32). L. acidophilus is among the least oxygen-tolerant lactobacilli (33), although it has been reported to produce superoxide dismutase (SOD) (34). In contrast, the NCFM genome did not reveal a putative SOD homolog.…”

“…Of these, Lactobacillus acidophilus remains to be the most widely recognized and commercially distributed probiotic culture. The organism was first isolated by Moro in 1900 from infant feces and is characterized as a homofermentative, short Gram-positive rod (2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10) m) that grows optimally from 37°C to 42°C (34).…”

“…2A) showed typically long rod-shaped cells with smooth surfaces, the dimension of these cells was ca. 450-550 nm height, and 3.5-4.0 m in length [29]. Often the cells also exhibited a layer extended on the glass surface and surrounding the bacterium, which may probably be a layer of exopolysaccharide [30].…”

“…While some heavy metals have a negative effect on transcriptional regulation of MnSOD, manganese has been shown to induce MnSOD in Escherichia coli B, 109 lactobacilli, 110 human breast cancer Hs578T cells 111 and HeLa cells. 112 In E. coli B, Mn 21 was shown to induce MnSOD in an O 2 -dependent fashion.…”
