“…Binding of Ang II to the Ang II type 1 receptor (AT 1 R) enhances the activation of NOX ( Masi et al, 2019 ), which is a substantial producer of ROS, including O 2 −• ( Wen et al, 2019 ). The elevated levels of O 2 −• detected in the H9c2 cells depleted the antioxidant SOD, which functions as a first line of defense against cardiomyocyte hypertrophy by converting the radical anion into water and hydrogen peroxide ( Campos-Shimada et al, 2020 ).…”

“…The specific proteins that experienced highly significant changes as a result of cryopreservation were also evaluated and thus can be discriminants for the major consequences of stress imposed by the procedure. Cryopreservation caused a marked and highly significant decrease in the amount of Superoxide dismutase (Cu–Zn) (SOD1), an enzyme which forms part of the first line of defense against oxidative stress in most organisms. Although it has previously been reported that this enzyme is affected by cryopreservation, , this is the first time that SOD1 is identified as a discriminating variable using bioinformatic analysis, being one of the most highly significantly different proteins between fresh and frozen thawed semen. This finding strongly supports the theory that alterations in redox regulation and oxidative stress are a major factor involved in cryodamage as also seen in the present study, indicated by the increased level of 4-HNE in cryopreserved spermatozoa.…”

“…Catalase (CAT) activity was evaluated according to the method described by Chance and Greenstein 1992 27 . Meanwhile, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) 28 and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were determined using the method of Misra and Fridovich (1972) 29 .…”
