Superior vena caval aneurysm

Abstract: Venous aneurysms arising from the mediastinal systemic veins are rare. There are only 27 reported cases of such aneurysms. Majority arise from the superior vena cava. We are reporting a saccular aneurysm of superior vena cava in a 58-year-old male. The chest radiogram suggested superior mediastinal mass and the computed tomogram was suggestive of aortic arch aneurysm. Aortography and venography confirmed the diagnosis as saccular aneurysm arising from the superior vena cava. A 7 cm saccular aneurysm arising fr… Show more

“…In asymptomatic patients where the diameter of the aneurysm is less than 40 mm, we might proceed conservatively, using anti-plaque therapy and periodic scans (4). Aneurysms which are larger, growing, symptomatic or containing thrombus require radical surgical treatment (3,5,6). Part of the thrombus forming the sack of the aneurysm can break away and cause pulmonary embolism or lung infarct which may lead to the patient's death (7,8).…”

“…In contrary to PLSVC, aneurysms of thoracic veins including SVC are extremely rare with merely about 30 cases reported in the literature (Varma et al, 2003). Both congenital and acquired causes of the pathology are possible.…”
