Superior Unidirectional Water Transport and Mechanically Stable 3D Orthogonal Woven Fabric for Human Body Moisture and Thermal Management

Abstract: Unidirectional water transport performance is vital for maintaining human thermal and wet comfort in the field of garment materials. In this work, a 3D orthogonal woven fabric (3DOWF) with excellent one‐way transport capacity and mechanical properties is developed via 3D weaving and plasma treatment. The 3DOWF consists of polyester yarns (first layer), cotton yarns (second layer), and viscose yarns (third layer) with successively enhanced water absorption capacity. This allows droplets to penetrate spontaneous… Show more

“…Multistructure textiles that differ from regular fabrics have achieved numerous new advances in fabric structure, such as 3D structure fabrics, due to the continual change and development of fabric processing technologies. [ 113 , 114 ] 3D fabrics commonly include 3D woven fabrics, 3D knitted fabrics and 3D nonwoven fabrics, which have an expanded thickness direction in addition to the 2D structure of planar materials. The fabrics with 3D structures deliver enhanced capability to accommodate multidirectional responsiveness and larger deformation, promoting the device performance.…”

“…86 Garments with unidirectional hydrophobicity performance can improve the thermal and wet comfort of the human body. 87 Keratin could also be attached to the surface of polyester fabric after amine hydrolysis treatment to form unidirectional hydrophobicity due to the difference in hygroscopicity of the two materials. Moisture Management Tester (MMT) results showed that the hygroscopicity of the keratin-treated fabric was significantly higher than that of the untreated fabric.…”

“…Figure 2a shows that HMPW has better hydrophobicity than the other samples with the largest contact angle at 0, 5, and 10 s. Figure 2b compares contact angles for the RW and HMPW. 55 After pretreatment of HMPW, the lignin−hemicellulose aggregates were destroyed, and the hydrophilic hemicellulose was removed in large amounts. The lignin in the sample underwent a glass transition in hot molding and formed a layer on the surface of the biocomposite during cooling.…”
