Superior Performance Nanocomposites from Uniformly Dispersed Octadecylamine Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract: Polyetherimide (PEI) is a widely applied as engineering plastic in the electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries but the disadvantages of extremely low conductivity, atmospheric moisture absorption, and poor fluidity at high temperature limits its application. Herein, commercial multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were modified with a long alkyl chain molecule, octadecylamine (ODA), to produce a uniform dispersion in commercial PEI matrices. Both covalent and noncovalent modification of MWCNTs with … Show more

“…Furthermore, bands appearing at 2918 and 2851 cm −1 are attributed to stretching vibrations from C-H bonds of the alcylic chain of ODA (vibrations from CH 2 and CH 3 groups, respectively), as well as the absorptions at 1467 and 1385 cm −1 . The strong absorption that is caused by the carbonate chains of ODA covers in a big degree the remaining features from the CNWs except for the previously observed bands at 1571 and 1610 cm −1 [24,25]. by the carbonate chains of ODA covers in a big degree the remaining features from the CNWs except for the previously observed bands at 1571 and 1610 cm −1 [24,25].…”

“…Generally, GO shows typical peaks of broad band at ~3340 cm -1 which associated to hydroxyl groups, while 1717 cm -1 correspond to carboxyl groups, 1625 cm -1 is C=C in aromatic ring and 1060 cm -1 is for C-O-C in epoxide respectively. 20,21,24 Thus the FTIR data verify the existence of oxygen containing functional groups in GO. Upon functionalisation with various alkylamine through γ-ray irradiation, the peaks around 2852-2920 cm -1 appeared corresponding to the C-H stretching vibration of the alkyl chain (CH 2 ) together with peak around ~728 cm -1 .…”

“…The interaction of alkylamine with GO may decrease the order of crystallinity in graphite or deteriorate the degree of graphite crystallinity, which induces the main diffraction peak to become broader and slightly shifting to low angle. 24 After functionalisation, the peak was further shifted to 3.8° (GO-A12), 3.5° (GO-A14), and 3.3° (GO-A16 and GO-A18) correspond to the expansion on the interlayer of GO sheets from 0.824 nm to 2.325 nm (GO-A12), 2.525 nm (GO-A14) and 2.677 nm (GO-A16 and GO-A18) respectively. On the other hand, the broad peak around 18°-24° was arise due to the formation of reaggregated graphene sheets.…”

“…The sharpest diffraction peak at around 2θ = 26.3°corresponded to 002 planes of graphite (53). Also, the similarity of XRD patterns of raw and treated MWCNTs, meaning that chemical attachment of meglumine, only affected the CNT surfaces without any destruction of the CNT original structure (54)(55)(56).…”
