Supergravity Before and After 1976

Abstract: This paper is part of the lecture given at the TH Division of CERN and devoted to the CXXV anniversary of the birthday of Elie Cartan . It is shown how the methods of differential geometry, due to E. Cartan, were applied to the construction of the supersymmetry transformation law and to the actions for Goldstone fermions and supergravity.

“…As pointed out by Volkov [3], the transformation laws in (2.21) coincide with those used by Deser and Zumino in their construction of N = 1 supergravity [2]. We should remark that the supersymmetry transformations of the Goldstone fields X a and Θ i β are given by the relations (2.8).…”

“…and similarly for the dotted spinors. Let P(4) be the universal covering group of the restricted Poincaré group ISO 0 (3,1). It is usually realized as the group of linear inhomogeneous transformations (M, b) acting on the space of 2 × 2 Hermitian matrices x = x a σ a = x † as follows: 4) is equivalently realized as the group of linear inhomogeneous transformations acting on the space of 2 × 2 Hermitian matrices x := x a σa = x † as follows:…”

“…The supersymmetric coupling of the gravitino and Goldstino in D ¼ 10 at the quadratic level in fermions was studied in [8,9]. The curved superspace formulation of the VA Goldstino theory was studied soon after the discovery of this theory; see for example a review paper [10] or an application of the constrained superfield formalism in superspace in [11]. The relation between the superspace approach and nonlinearly realized supersymmetries was investigated in [12].…”

“…In fact, such a complete supergravity model action with explicit spontaneously broken local supersymmetry was not even presented in the literature. Some partial work in this direction includes [98] where a proposal was made how to generalize the global Volkov-Akulov model to a locally supersymmetric one and [99,100], where the curved superspace formulation…”
