Superfluidity: a flexible functional architecture for 5G networks

Abstract: We propose the innovative architecture of Superfluidity, a Horizon 2020 project, co‐funded by the European Union. Superfluidity targets 5G networks, by addressing key network operator challenges with a multi‐pronged approach, based on the concept of a flexible, highly adaptive, superfluid network. Superfluidity supports rapid service deployment and migration in a heterogeneous network environment, regardless of the underlying hardware. The overall proposal offers advanced capabilities in terms of service deplo… Show more

“…Since the concept of RFB is not constrained to a given operating system, platform‐agnostic languages and tools are needed to describe the interactions and connections between the RFBs and the execution environments on which the RFB can be deployed. We refer the reader to Bianchi et al for a detailed overview of these features.…”

“…Moreover, other possible implementation of RFBs can be modules and components of special purpose execution environments, like extended finite state machines based on OpenFlow for packet processing, software routers, or radio signal processing chains . In this way, the management of the network through a set of RFBs introduces the levels of flexibility and agility, which are required for a full exploitation of the predicted 5G services …”

“…The instantiation times of the virtualized resources could be required to stay in the order of milliseconds. The architecture proposed in [13] follows the Superfluid NFV approach considering the decomposition of services into smaller reusable components and the highly dynamic instantiation of virtualized resources. The…”
