Superficial community‐acquired skin infections: prevalence of bacteria and antibiotic susceptibility in France

Abstract: The results of the two epidemiological studies of superficial community acquired skin infections with a comparable methodology at a 6-year interval demonstrated that the prevalence of CA-MRSA skin infection remained low in this setting.

“…Invasive MRSA infections result in more deaths annually (~18,500) 6 than any other single infectious agent in the United States, exceeding the number of deaths associated with HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis and influenza combined 7 . MRSA infections are endemic in hospitals worldwide; in addition, community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) can cause infections in otherwise healthy individuals 4,5 and is responsible for a significant percentage of S. aureus skin and soft tissue infections in the United States (>50%) 2 , Asian countries (~17%) 8 and Europe (ranging from <1% to 32%, depending on the country) 911 . USA300 has emerged as the most prevalent CA-MRSA isolate in the United States and is commonly associated with skin and soft tissue infections 4,5 .…”

“…[5][6][7] Staphylococcal resistance to pristinamycin was <1-2% in France and worldwide before 1990, 8,9 and then increased slightly to 4AE8% in 1998, but S. aureus isolates from community-acquired superficial skin infection are still mostly susceptible to pristinamycin in France. 10 However, major variations in the percentages of resistance to pristinamycin according to the hospital (from 0% to 44% in France) 11 or to the country (26% among S. aureus isolates, mostly MRSA, in a Korean hospital) 12 may reflect the spread of epidemic strains. Consequently, surveillance of MRSA resistance to pristinamycin and analysis of the factors favouring its acquisition are major concerns, as pristinamycin may remain one of the few molecules active against MRSA strains.…”

Antimicrobial surveillance data showed a dramatic increase of S. aureus pristinamycinresistance rate in this department, from 1% in 1998 to >11% between 1999 and 2002, contrasting with the other departments, where the resistance rate remained stable.…”
