Supercritical Water Oxidation of Lurgi Coal Gasification Wastewater and Evaluation of the Combined Process with Gasification

Abstract: Degradation of Lurgi coal gasification wastewater in supercritical water was investigated in a batch reactor, and a combined process of supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) and gasification was put forward to utilize the material and energy in SCWO effluent. The technical feasibility and economy were evaluated. In the SCWO process, when operated at condition of 500 °C, 25 MPa, oxygen ratio of 3.5 and residence time of 15 min, the concentrations of COD, NH3-N and volatile phenol in effluent reduced to 27, 11 an… Show more

“…Recently, the application of SCWO in coking wastewater has drawn considerable attention in China. Our studies show that for a wastewate with COD and NH 3 -N of 14900 and 7600 mg/L, respectively, the effluent quality after SCWO could satisfy the class-I criteria specified in the Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard of China (GB 8978-1996) [1,2]. However, the corrosion of materials is one of the key limiting factors for the industrialization of SCWO process.…”

“…It was often to increase reaction temperature, instead of increasing the amounts of oxygen to promote the pollutants decreasing. However, for the LCGW treatment, we have proposed a combination process between the SCWO and gasification processes . Here, the SCWO effluent is directly entered into the gasifier as gasification agents through which the excessive oxygen in SCWO process can be recovered completely, ultimately minimizing the cost limit of oxygen.…”

“…In their most recent study, Qian et al [16] presented an experimental and thermodynamic study for a combined process of SCWG and supercritical water partial oxidation (SCWPO) using liquid oxygen. Wang et al [17] studied a batch reactor that combined the degradation of Lurgi coal gasification wastewater (LCGW) with SCWO. Another work by Wang et al [18] proposed a combined process for cocking wastewater treatment with separated reactors for oxidation and gasification.…”
