Supercritical water oxidation of dioxins and furans in waste incinerator fly ash, sewage sludge and industrial soil

Abstract: ABSTRACTwere between 90 and 99%. There did not appear to be any significant differences in the PCDD/PCDF destruction efficiencies in relation to the different sample matrices of the waste incinerator flyash, sewage sludge and contaminated industrial soil.

“…MSW incineration has some advantages, such as volume reduction and energy recovery (Huai et al, 2008;Zhang et al, 2012). However, it also causes problems such as the release of dioxins (Zainal et al, 2014;Bogdal et al, 2013). In recent years, MSW pyrolysis is getting more and more concerns, because it may ease the problem of dioxins pollution and produce char, oil and syngas that can be further utilized López et al, 2010).…”

“…In cement kilns, these compounds form depending on kiln design and burning process, characteristics of the crude mixture and dedusting conditions of operating equipment. In modern clinker kilns, in stable operating conditions, if fuel is fed to the main burner, there are conditions for the destruction of organic compounds: a flame temperature of about 2000°C, a long residence time of gases in the furnace (5 -10 seconds at temperatures between 1200°C and maxim 2000°C) and a constant oxidizing atmosphere [3][4][5][6][11][12][13][14].…”

“…In the case of secondary combustion, when calcination installation temperature does not exceed 900 -1100ºC, in order to avoid the formation of dioxins and furans is necessary to limit the halogenated compounds content of alternative fuels [3,4]. The limit value for dioxins and furans emission for a sampling period of at least 6 hours and up to 8 hours, according to the Romania law 278/2013 regarding industrial emissions in order to ensure a 10% O2 concentration is 0.1 ng/Nm 3 [8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…With such unique properties, supercritical water (SCW) serves as an attractive medium for homogeneous chemical reactions with elimination of transfer limitation between reactants. Supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) has been proposed as an innovative technology for treating hazardous organic pollutants like sewage sludge and industrial wastes [3][4][5], providing complete and rapid destruction of wastes without formation of harmful by-products. Organics are oxidized to carbon dioxide, water and molecular nitrogen within 1 min under appropriate conditions.…”
