Ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) of the oil from the seeds/peel mixture of pumpkin using ethanol as solvent was investigated. The effects of the ultrasound, solvent volume, time, and temperature on the oil yield were evaluated. Oil extraction from the seeds by ultrasound and the mixture by Soxhlet extraction (SE) was also performed. The use of ultrasound and higher availability of ethanol (up to 6 mL g −1 sample) favored the oil removal. In the extraction kinetics, the washing step was verified in the first 20 min, corresponding to 79-89% of the total oil yield. The diffusion coefficient increased from 30 to 75 C, as well as the spontaneity of the extraction, achieving 71% of the SE. Linoleic and oleic acids were found in higher concentrations in the oils. UAE made possible the greater extraction of β-carotene, tocopherols, and fistosterois, and the peel addition provided higher contents of these compounds.

Optimization of ultrasound‐assisted extraction of bioactive compounds from B. forficata subsp. Pruinosa

Extracts containing bioactive compounds were obtained from Bauhinia forficata leaves by ultrasound‐assisted extraction (UAE) with three different solvents (n‐hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol) and were compared with those obtained by a conventional method (maceration). Box‐Behnken experimental design was applied to examine and optimize the effect of the extraction temperature (40°C‐60°C), power (20%‐80%), and sample to solvent ratio (1:10 to 1:20 (w/v)) on the total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) of B. forficata leaf extracts. This experimental design generated second‐order polynomial models, which accurately describe the experimental data, allowing the prediction of optimal conditions for the investigated responses. Optimal extraction was achieved under the following conditions: 80% power, temperature of 41°C, and a 1:20 sample to solvent ratio. Under these conditions, the experimental yield was 8.33 ± 0.32%, total phenolic content was 59.47 ± 0.71 mg GAE · gextract−1, total flavonoid content was 62.30 ± 3.38 mg QE · gextract−1, and the ferric reducing antioxidant power was 726.7 ± 15.7 μmol Fe(II)EQ · gextract−1, which were close to the predicted values, which validated the models. The major compounds found in B. forficata extracts were tocopherols, phytol, heneicosane, and β‐Sitosterol.

Parrotia persica Yellow and Amber Leaves’ Lipophilic Phytochemicals Obtained by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction

Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction was used for the extraction of Parrotia persica yellow and amber leaves. The lipophilic phytochemicals present in the analyzed leaves were as follows: neophytadiene, hexahydrofarnesyl acetone, octadecanal, 1-octadecanol, phytol, squalene and α-tocopherol. α-cadinol was present in yellow and β-sitosterol in amber leaves. The Box–Behnken design was used for the optimization of pressure, temperature and CO2 flow rate and response surface methodology for the total extraction yield and α-tocopherol relative amount. The total extraction yield was 1.62% for yellow and 1.52% for amber leaves. The α-tocopherol relative amount was 80.03 mg per 100 g of dry plant material for yellow leaves and 315.30 mg per 100 g of dry plant material for amber leaves. The effects of temperature and CO2 flow rate were found to have a significant influence on the total extraction yield for both plant materials analyzed. The effects of pressure and temperature significantly influenced the α-tocopherol relative amount in both plant materials used. The optimum extraction conditions for the total extraction yield were 30 MPa, 40 °C and 3 kg·h−1 CO2 flow rate for both plant samples. In the case of the α-tocopherol relative amount, the optimum temperature was 40 °C, while the pressure and CO2 flow rate were slightly different. The predicted values matched well with the experimental values for the total extraction yield and α-tocopherol relative amount in all plant materials used for the experiment.
