Supercontinuum generation in ZBLAN fibers—detailed comparison between measurement and simulation

Abstract: We present a detailed comparison between modeling and experiments on supercontinuum (SC) generation in a commercial ZBLAN step-index fiber. Special emphasis is put on identifying accurate material parameters by incorporating measurements of the ZBLAN Raman gain, fiber dispersion, and loss. This identification of accurate parameters is of great importance to substantiate numerical simulations of SC generation in soft-glass fibers. Good agreement between measurement and simulation is obtained when pumping both i… Show more

“…A one-photon-per-mode noise model was used to model the spectral fluctuations from shot to shot in the input pulse [35,42]. The GNLSE was solved in the frequency domain in the interaction picture and included the frequency dependence of the effective area as detailed in [43]. A wavelength dependent Kerr coefficient estimated by Romanova et al [44] was used together with the Raman response measured by Ung and Skorobogatiy [45].…”

“…3), after which the measured spectrum demonstrates more asymmetry and stronger red-shift than the calculation. We attribute this to the action of the Raman self-frequency shift [13], which was not included in our model. An independent confirmation of the modelling relevance comes from the direct dispersion measurements, recently performed by our group [17].…”

“…The coupling efficiency reached 43%. The output pulse energy was measured after the collimating lens and assumed equal to the launched energy, as the fiber attenuation was reported to be 0.08 dB/m at 2.5 μm [13] and the fiber is quoted single-mode in this wavelength range. As a nonlinear fiber we used commercially-available single-mode step-index ZBLAN fiber for infrared applications from IR Photonics.…”

“…Supercontinuum generation in excess of 4,000 nm has been reported in step index fibers or suspended core photonic crystal fibers made of various multicomponent glasses, e.g. ZBLAN (ZrF 4 -BaF 2 -LaF 3 -AlF 3 -NaF) (Agger et al 2012), tellurite (eg. 75TeO 2 -12ZnO-5PbO-3PbF 2 -5Nb 2 O 5 ) (Domachuk et al 2008) and chalcogenide (As 2 S 3 ) (Marandi et al 2012).…”
