Superconductivity and crystalline electric field effects in the filled skutteruditePrRu4As12

Abstract: Magnetization, electrical-resistivity, specific-heat, and thermopower measurements were performed on single crystals of the filled skutterudite compound PrRu 4 As 12 . These measurements reveal a superconducting transition near 2.5 K that is quantified by: ͑1͒ magnetic susceptibility data which display an onset to a Meissner state at T c Ϸ 2.5 K and complete diamagnetic shielding as T → 2.0 K, ͑2͒ electrical-resistivity data which show a transition to a zero-resistance state at T c Ϸ 2.5 K, and ͑3͒ specific-he… Show more

“…The electronic specific heat coefficient γ is consistently below 100 mJ/mol K 2 with only PrOs 4 Sb 12 having a significantly larger value of γ ≈ 600 mJ/mol K 2 . 2,9,50,51 The Debye temperature Θ D exhibits values near 200 K except in PrRu 4 As 12 with Θ D = 344 K. 9,53,54 While many of the Pr-based skutterudites have values of T c between 1-2 K, PrPt 4 Ge 12 is unique with T c = 7.9 K. The ratio ∆/k B T c is also enhanced for PrPt 4 Ge 12 relative to the other compounds, exhibiting values of approximately 2.3. It is interesting to observe that many of the properties of these Pr-based superconducting filled skutterudites are very similar, despite the different atomic cages within which the Pr ions reside.…”

“…Other examples are cubic PrIn 3 [68], hexagonal PrCu 5 , orthorhombic PrCu 6 [69], and a number of other metallic Pr 3+ systems showing the CF effect. It is worth mentioning that of the caged systems such as the PrRu 4 As 12 skutterudite [70] and others, the ρ(T) function has also been analyzed in terms of the CF model. None of these systems show magnetic ordering, down to the lowest temperature measured, since their ground state is a non-magnetic CF singlet.…”

“…2(b)]. Although for both materials some signatures of multigap superconductivity were reported [49,50], a single-band BCS model accounts well for their H c1 ðTÞ data in the entire temperature range of study, as discussed below.…”

“…3(c). Furthermore, even the presence of noninteracting localized 4f electrons, as shown for PrRu 4 As 12 which is considered to be a conventional paramagnetic metal [49], does not induce an anisotropy of phonon-mediated pairing. Studies at very low temperatures, i.e., at T < 0.1T b c ð≃0.05 KÞ where the α ¼ 1.25 model is expected to saturate, could help to develop a detailed understanding of all these observations but this would require a highly elaborated approach.…”
