Superconducting RF Cavity Development for the International Linear Collider

Abstract: The International Linear Collider is planned as the next energy-frontier electron-positron accelerator. The main linacs of the collider are based on superconducting radio-frequency cavity technology, and will accelerate electron and positron beams up to 250 + 250 GeV at the center-of-mass energy. Based on the Reference Design Report issued in 2007, the ILC Global Design Effort has moved into the Technical Design phase. This paper describes the status of the design, R&D efforts, and plans of the superconducting… Show more

“…Table 7.4 gives a summary of superconducting cavity operation in FLASH, planned operation at European-XFEL, and planned for ILC [65,66]. Superconducting cavity technology is expected to advance substantially through further optimization of cavity materials, shapes (TESLA, Low-Loss, Re-entrant), and cost-effective fabrication techniques [57,[59][60][61][65][66][67][68].…”

“…The typical properties of a 1.3-GHz superconducting ILC-type cavity are presented, e.g., in [4]. Each ILC-type cryomodule for the proposed SCL would contain eight niobium 9-cell cavities and a focusing quadrupole magnet at its centre.…”

“…This quantity is defined as the distance of propagation over which radiation with spectral width ∆λ becomes 180 • out of phase. 6 The coherence time, defined by t coh ≡ L coh /c ∼ 1/∆ν, is much shorter than the pulse duration: t coh ≈ 0.3 fs.…”
