Superconducting coil fed by PEM fuel cell

Abstract: In this paper, we propose to take advantage of this low voltage for a specific application stack such as superconducting coils power supply. At present, such applications are dealt with the use of specific electronic power supplies, exhibiting in most cases a huge volume and/or a low energy yield.

“…For this purpose, after having proven that fuel cells can exhibit the electrical behavior of a regulated current source, as shown in Fig. 2, we carried out some preliminary tests reported in [2], with a 100 cm² single fuel cell feeding a small superconducting coil with an inductance value of 4 mH which parameters are given in Table I. These experimental tests revealed the potentialities of this technique.…”

“…current supply of superconducting coils. Indeed, we tested the association of a Melika Hinaje, Stéphane Raël, Kévin Berger, Rafael Linares, and Jean Lévêque are with the Group of Research in Electrical Engineering of Nancy, University of 100 cm² single fuel cell (FC) and a small superconducting coil, with an inductance value of 4 mH [2]. Once more, the experiment was convincing, this is the reason why we decided to extend the study to a large superconducting coil, with an inductance value of several henrys.…”

“…In this paper, we propose an innovative application that takes great advantage of both PEMFC low voltage and current source behavior: the electrical supply for high-inductive superconducting coils. Hinaje et al [2] have already experimented, in GREEN laboratory, the use of a fuel cell for supplying current to a superconducting coil. However, the experiment was led on a low inductance superconducting coil , i.e.…”

“…As a matter of fact, for voltages below 100 mV, close to short circuit, the current delivered by the cell has been observed to correspond well to the flow rate of fed hydrogen according to Faraday's law – air oxygen was introduced in excess for these tests (Figure ). Besides the worked case of the above direct hybridization, applications for this specific operating regime can be power supply to superconducting coils – operated at very low voltages – as tested by .…”
