Super-Cationic Carbon Quantum Dots Synthesized from Spermidine as an Eye Drop Formulation for Topical Treatment of Bacterial Keratitis

Abstract: We have developed a one-step method to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQD) from biogenic polyamines (PAs) as an antibacterial agent for topical treatment of bacterial keratitis (BK). CQDs synthesized by direct pyrolysis of spermidine (Spd) powder through a simple dry heating treatment exhibit a solubility and yield much higher than those from putrescine and spermine. We demonstrate that CQDs obtained from Spds (CQD) possess effective antibacterial activities against non-multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli, S… Show more

“…No apparent difference was observed in the bactericidal effects on S. aureus and E. coli incubated with the GS NSs dispersions; however, this finding is different from the findings of some previous studies, which have reported that several nanomaterials exhibit a higher antimicrobial activity against Gram (+) bacteria than against Gram (−) bacteria. This difference is attributed to the thickness of the cell envelope; however, in addition to the biological differences between bacteria, the physiochemical properties of the nanomaterials play a significant role in the antimicrobial effects.…”

“…20 Jian et al has reported that the relatively high positive charge will not affect cellular morphology and membrane integrity. 43 Therefore, these results revealed that the nanocomposites exhibited good biocompatibility and the concentration of LDH carriers less than 75 μg/mL should be a safe level for further cellular studies.…”

“…To date, topical administration is the safest and effective treatment for most ocular diseases because of ease of use and low-cost manufacturing. 35 Efforts have been devoted to develop drug delivery systems to extend drug activity, thus reducing dosing frequency and improving patient compliance. 68 Topical drug vehicles are expected to be biocompatible, mucoadhesive, and have suitable viscosity.…”
