40Ar/39Ar ages and geological significance of Neoproterozoic–Cambrian mafic rocks in the Aksu–Wushi area, NW Tarim Craton

Abstract: Mafic dyke swarms and continental flood basalts record crucial information on mantle dynamics, crustal palaeostress, and supercontinent cycle. However, these mafic rocks are relatively difficult to date using zircon U–Pb methods because autogenous magmatic zircons are rare or absent in the rapidly cooled mafic magmas and most zircons extracted from these rocks are likely captured from their wall rocks. One good example of this dilemma is the Precambrian mafic dykes and layered basites in the Aksu–Wushi area, N… Show more

“…40 Ar/ 39 Ar analyses are an important tool to date metamorphic and also igneous events (Dickin, 2018;Faure & Mensing, 2005;Schaen et al, 2020). When these analyses are integrated with the rock's fabric, it is possible to improve discussions in deformation ages, nature of the protolith, thermal event ages in metamorphic belts (Chen, Liu, Qu, & Hu, 2020;Sorokin et al, 2018), or crystallization age in volcanic rocks, cooling ages of plutonic suites, and even the magmatism spanning igneous associations (Lu et al, 2018;Schalteger et al, 2019;Schmitt, Emmermann, Trumbull, Buhn, & Henjes-Kunst, 2000).…”
