1H, 29Si, and 27Al MAS NMR as a Tool to Characterize Volcanic Tuffs and Assess Their Suitability for Industrial Applications

Abstract: The type and quality of the information provided by the direct analysis of volcanic tuffs by 1H, 29Si, and 27Al NMR were investigated. At this aim, five tuffs, characterized by different origin, bonding mechanism, and clast composition, were used as test materials. Results consistent with the different nature of the tuff matrix and mineral composition were obtained. While the relative content of Al in the crystal and amorphous phase was determined by 27Al MAS and 3Q MAS NMR, the prevalent glassy or zeolitic na… Show more

“…A lithified tuff cemented by zeolites (TRSN) with a Si/Al of 2.45, and a SSA 5 m 2 g −1 , and a vitric tuff cemented by glass (PTV), with a Si/Al 3.3 and a SSA of 1.75 m 2 g −1 were selected as test materials. Details on their origin, petrographic features, and practical applications can be found in [18], together with the average oxide composition and other features, including the spectroscopic ones. Figure 18.5 highlights well the differences between the two tuffs.…”
