Sunscreens: A review

Abstract: Sunlight despite of source of life and energy creating major health challenges like sunburn, pigmentation, wrinkles, dermatitis, urticaria, ageing, immune-suppression and number of skin cancers too. Sun protective clothes and or sunglasses provide insufficient and less convenient approach to get rid of all these health hazards. So sunscreen protection is popular mean among various regions of world. Present article have summarize types and classification, regulations, terminologies, evaluation methods, labeling… Show more

“…These so-called "natural chemicals" (i.e., polyphenols, carotenoids, vitamins and anthocyanidins) possess radical scavenger properties against ROS generated by UV-filters reaction with solar radiation, providing broad-spectrum sunscreen products with antioxidant, wound healing and anti-inflammatory properties [27]. The booster effect on the body natural reserve of antioxidants can contribute to neutralization of intrinsic and extrinsic ROS, creating a new kind of sunscreen with a two-step protection: The first operated by UV-filters as a "passive" protection by absorbing and reflecting UV radiation and the second as "active" protection by antioxidants quenching ROS generated by UV light that has by-passed UV filters [4].…”

“…This behavior can be understood as a function of the double valence of cerium cations, in addition to Ni cation insertion in the crystalline lattice of CeO2. In two separate studies, Coey and Sundaresan suggested that increased oxygen vacancies due to the development of reduced cerium Ce +3 from Ce +4 of lattice can increase the interactions between unpaired spins and thus increase the ferromagnetic behavior of CeO2 nanoparticles [36,37]. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a standard measurement of the ability of sunscreens to absorb UV rays.…”

“…In vitro SPF has been applied to be linear, precise, accurate, specific and robust [15]. In order to evaluated the photoprotection efficacy of AF by absorbing UVR at the erythema-inductor region, the in vitro SPF was determined.…”
