“Sumo-compression” Stops Post Partum Haemorrhage

Abstract: Post partum haemorrhage (PPH) from uterine atony or extensive trauma of vaginal tissue is a major cause of maternal mortality. Compression of vaginal tissue and uterus by tightly packing the vagina with laparotomy pads is described as a novel approach for the management of PPH. A bandage is placed as a very tight belt above the uterus. Counterpressure is achieved by a second bandage, which runs from anterior to posterior and is tied to the belt pressing the pads inside the vagina firmly against the uterus. The… Show more

“…By using horizontal stiches, it may be possible to achieve earlier physiologic contraction and recovery of the myometrium. Note that in cases of PPH after vaginal delivery with extensive trauma of vaginal tissue at the study hospital, the “sumo‐compression” technique is used when suturing is not effective.…”

“…EACD has been shown to reduced time to cessation of uterine bleeding significantly in one study; however, additional research is necessary to determine the effectiveness of this device [6]. "Sumocompression" after vaginal delivery in patients with severe postpartum haemorrhage has been reported [7]. The uterus is compressed from below by tight packing of the vagina with 3-5 sterile gauze pads.…”
