“…In recent years, various edge detection methods have been applied to satellite SST images (e.g., Cornillon, 1999, 2001;Pozo-Vazquez et al, 1999;Shimada et al, 2005;Chang et al, 2006;Lan et al, 2009;Belkin and O'Reilly, 2009;. Pozo-Vazquez et al (1999) demonstrated the powerful performance of an edge detection algorithm based on an entropic criterion using the Jensen-Shannon divergence (JSD) filter.…”

“…However, an incursion of a cold current along the Chinese coast is rare and seemingly limited due to the domination of warm water from the SCS in summer (Jan et al 2002). The results of Lan et al (2009) also showed weak frontal patches along the Chinese coast during summer because of the appearance of cold water mass inshore which may be generated by the coastal upwelling forced from prevailing southwesterly monsoon. It is suggested that because of the absence of a cold current inshore, the long frontal band along the Chinese coast cannot be formed in summer.…”

“…Because these upwelling regions are near to each other, distinguishing them using SST images can be a challenge. However, the boundaries of the upwelling region revealed that SST fronts can be accurately detected using an entropy-based edge-detection method (Shimada et al 2005;Lan et al 2009). A decadal warming phenomenon was revealed in the summertime SST images and, among them, the coldest three SST patterns were observed in 1982 -1988.…”

“…To the west of the PHC is the shallow Taiwan Banks (TWB). Numerous summertime upwelling zones have been identified using remote sensing and hydrological and biological observations (Hong et al 1991;Lan et al 2009). According to Tang et al (2002), two major upwelling areas exist in the TS, one roughly east of the TWB and the other along the China coastal region.…”
