Summer season variability of dissolved oxygen concentration in Antarctic lakes rich in cyanobaterial mats

Abstract: Since 2007, limnological investigation of terrestrial lakes has been carried out at James Ross Island, Antarctica. The lakes in scope differ in their size, origin, geomorphological and hydrological characteristics. In several selected lakes, dissolved oxygen is measured repeatedly each summer season in order to quantify lake-and weather-related differences. For this study, typical reresentatives of (i) coastal shalow lakes, and (ii) high-altitude lakes with cyanobacterial mats were chosen. We present data on d… Show more

“…Generally, a W neighbourhood of Big Lachman Lake, Interlagos, and Small Lach-man Lake is very rich in green spots formed by dominating mosses and algal/ cyanobacterial mats. The mats are rich in a great variety of algae and cyanobacteria here covering bottom of small streams and smallarea ponds (Váczi et Barták 2011). Some of green spots, however do not reach an area of 400 m 2 and thus were not included into this study.…”

“…In spite of the fact that, due to neighbouring rock walls of the Lachman Crags mesa, the pool is sunlit directly only for limited period of daytime (typically until 15:30 local time), Dulanek Lake is rich in cyanobacterial mats. Since 2009, measurements of dissolved oxygen concentration have been carried out there during summer season (Váczi et Barták 2011).…”

“…Microclimate of the site of the collection is described by Láska et al (2011). Generally, the northern part of James Ross Island is deglaciated and rich in terrestrial freshwater lakes (Nedbalová et al 2013), small-area ponds (Váczi et Barták 2011) and streams. All these ecosystems are inhabited by algae and cyanobacteria (see Skácelová et al 2015 for preliminary review).…”
