Summer distribution of the Mediterranean sperm whale: insights from the acoustic Accobams survey initiative

Clara Lerebourg,
Oliver Boisseau,
Vincent Ridoux
et al.

Abstract: The Mediterranean sperm whale population, Physeter macrocephalus, is listed as endangered due to population decline caused by human activities. To mitigate the impact of these activities, accurate knowledge of their distribution and abundance is crucial. During their long dives, sperm whales are not available to visual observation, but since they produce sounds when they dive, they are available to acoustic detection. Therefore, we aimed to use towed acoustic data to model their habitat and fill the knowledge … Show more

“…Our survey constitutes a significant contribution to acoustic survey effort for the Levantine Basin, an area of the Mediterranean that has been identified as in need of more intensive sampling effort (Lerebourg et al, 2023). We confirm the presence of at least Using photo-identification and comparison with catalogues across the region, we provide the first evidence of at least one immature male whale using the wider Mediterranean Sea with a distance between sightings of 2800 km.…”

“…Our survey constitutes a significant contribution to acoustic survey effort for the Levantine Basin, an area of the Mediterranean that has been identified as in need of more intensive sampling effort (Lerebourg et al, 2023). We confirm the presence of at least three species of cetaceans within the deeper waters of the Israel's EEZ, including two species whose Mediterranean populations are classed as being at risk of extinction by the IUCN—sperm whales (Endangered; Pirotta et al (2021)) and Cuvier's beaked whales (Vulnerable; Cañadas & Notarbartolo de Sciara (2018).…”

“…The central and northern Adriatic were not surveyed acoustically as these areas were not considered to include potential sperm whale habitat (Lewis et al, 2018). Finally, model-based analyses of acoustic detections of sperm whales via towed hydrophones, during surveys conducted in 2018 in the Mediterranean (not including Adriatic waters), resulted in no individuals being predicted to occur in the Adriatic Sea; these predictions, however, were environmentally extrapolated and should be taken with caution (Lerebourg et al, 2023).…”
