Summary of the International Conference on Onco-Nephrology: an emerging field in medicine

Abstract: Onco-nephrology is an emerging field in medicine. Patients with cancer may suffer from kidney diseases because of the cancer itself and cancer-related therapy. It is critical for nephrologists to be knowledgeable of cancer biology and therapy in order to be fully integrated in the multidisciplinary team and optimally manage patients with cancer and kidney diseases. In a recent international meeting, the key issues in this challenging clinical interface were addressed, including many unresolved basic science qu… Show more

“…However, this may be a consequence of cancer registry indexing: in an Irish cohort with all skin cancers correctly registered, a 16-fold excess risk for BCC is present in KT patients compared to the age-matched general population [10]. The increased risk of tumors in KT subjects is one of the major topics in onconephrology [19].…”

“…Several biomarkers like Cystatin C and further neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin have consequently been recommended for the purpose of diagnosis, severity grouping and more essential, the modification in the AKI outcome [1]. Novel biomarkers are under investigation to determine whether they may enable earlier detection of decreased GFR and complications of AKI [3,111], as shown in Table 4.…”

“…Therefore, we have to consider it upon adjusting the drug dose using these estimates. 25 When taken together, based on the available evidence, the use of the CKD-EPI equation adjusted for BSA seems to be best option among the creatinine-based equations. In patients with cancer cachexia, the use of the cystatin C-based equation, or even more precisely isotopic GFR measurement, should be taken into consideration.…”

“…However, the reader can easily imagine the usefulness of their implementation in oncological settings. 25 Going beyond the basal GFR: total number of nephrons and renal reserve GFR is the total amount of fluid filtered in all glomeruli in 2 kidneys. Therefore, any reduction in GFR may result from (i) a change in filtration at the level of each glomerulus, the average single nephron GFR, which is functional and could be, in certain instances, reversible; and (ii) the loss of nephrons (nephron index), which is irreversible because glomerulogenesis does not occur in adults.…”
