Abstract

What is a map? A seemingly innocuous question that is deftly handled by the International Cartographic Association (ICA, 2015) as a symbolised representation of geographical reality, representing selected features or characteristics, resulting from the creative effort of its author's execution of choices, and is designed for use when spatial relationships are of primary relevance. With cartography being 'the discipline dealing with the art, science and technology of making and using maps'. Kraak and Ormeling (2010) define maps more simply as 'used to visualize geospatial data'. MacEachren et al. (2004) almost entirely ignore 'map' as a noun and go for the much more encompassing 'geovisualization' stating that it's a process for leveraging. .. data resources to meet scientific and societal needs and a research field that develops visual methods and tools to support a wide array of geospatial data applications.
