“…Photochemical Absorption Spectrum of the Respiratory Ferment. In yeast and Acetobacter pasteurianum the following photochemical absorption spectrum was thus found: a very high (Soret) band at 432-433 lUfx (€",.M = 156), a strong band at 283 m^{e^^i = 87), and a fainter baud at [590][591][592][593] m/x (e^M = 13.5). There are also weak bands in the green which appear to be different for yeast and Acetobacter (cf.…”

“…The diagram in Figure 4 gives the relations of the bands as found by Keilin. It is assumed that cytochrome a, which does not react with carbon monoxide, is accompanied by cytochrome as, which has similar absorption bands but reacts with carbon monoxide. To the carbon monoxide compound of the latter, the bands at [590][591][592][593] mju and 432 m^t are ascribed. In all cells studied the relative concentrations of cytochromes a and as were found to be the same {e.g., in the flight muscles of insects), and it is assumed that they are interconvertible.…”

“…of those who gave a history of taking " salts," while in those who had no such antecedent history the incidence of cyanosis was 29 per cent. It has been suggested that there is a causal relation between premedication with saline purgatives containing sulphur and the occurrence of cyanosis (Paton and Eaton, 1937;Discombe, 1937). The close equivalence of the percentages in the two groups in this series and the absence of severe cyanosis rather suggests that the enemata may have some preventive action on the occurrence of cyanosis.…”

“…Several other papers mention the proved occurrence of sulfhemoglobinemia, especially when sulfanilamide and saline cathartics (such as magnesium sulphate) are given concurrently (2,3).…”
