SynopsisMethylthiomethyl methacrylate (MLMA) was synthesized and homopolymerized in solution. The poly(MtMA1 is readily soluble in benzene, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, and rnethylenr chloride at room temperature. The values of K and a in the Mark-Houwink equation, [ q ] = KM", were found to be K = 2.88 x 10 ' and u = 0.76 when M = M u . The glass transition temperature of poly(MtMA) was observed to be 72°C by thermomechanical analysis. Intramolecular anhydride formation occurred when poly(MtMA1 was heated to 260-3OO'C. The kinetics of MtMA homopolymerization was investigated in benzene, using azobisisobutyronitrile a s initiator. The rate of polymerization R, was expressd by R,, : k[AlBNlo5[MtMAI'ns and the overall activation energy was calculated to he 75.7 kJ:mol. The relative reactivity ratios of MtMA in styrene copolymerizations ( r , -0.33, r2 = 0.55) were obtained. Applying the Q-e scheme led to Q = 1.07 and P = 0.51 for MtMA.
