“…A few studies have investigated the relationships between atmospheric SO 2 and neurological dysfunction [ 16 , 41 ]. Several studies have reported the effect of SO 2 on the cardiovascular system [ 42 , 43 ], however few studies have reported the effect on the CNS. Hippocampal synaptic dysfunction due to SO 2 exposure has been reported, and this may play a role in cognitive impairment [ 44 ].…”

“…It is well established that within the vasculature hydrogen sulfide (H2S) acts as an endogenous vasodilating mediator (Cirino et al, 2017). Several molecular targets have been identified such as potassium channels (i.e ATP-calcium-voltage gateddependent) (Yu et al, 2018;Zhao et al, 2001;Zuidema et al, 2010), transient receptor potential and chloride and sodium channels (Yu et al, 2018), phosphodiesterases (PDE) (Bucci et al, 2010;Coletta et al, 2012) and phospholipase A2 (d'Emmanuele di Villa Bianca et al, 2011;di Villa Bianca et al, 2010). H2S is endogenously generated by three constitutive enzymes: cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) and cystathionine βsynthase (CBS), that both use L-cysteine as substrate and require pyridoxal 5' phosphate (PLP) as a co-factor.…”

“…Researchers find H 2 S inhibits deposition of calcium in ECM, suppresses osteoblast trans-differentiation and calcification of VSMCs [20] , regulates K ATP channels to relax vascular smooth muscles and reduces expression of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) to inhibit proliferation of VSMCs [21] , [22] . H 2 S inhibits phosphorylation of STAT3 and expression of Jak to improve LPS-induced disorders of iron metabolism [23] .…”
