Sulforaphane and related mustard oils in focus of cancer prevention and therapy

Abstract: The plant family Brassicaceae, formerly Cruciferae, contains mustard oil glycosides, from which mustard oils are enzymatically hydrolyzed. Mustard oils offer protection from pests, microorganisms and fungi. More than 120 different mustard oils with various biological functions are known. Since ancient times, these substances are used as natural antibiotics, antiviral drugs and antimycotics. The antioxidative effect of mustard oils contributes to protection from DNA damage. Epidemiological and experimental stud… Show more

“…Our recent results demonstrate that sulforaphane sensitizes resistant pancreatic CSCs to TRAIL-induced apoptosis through the inhibition of basal and TRAIL-induced NF-κB activity (9). Based on several promising animal and epidemiological studies, prospective clinical trials with sulforaphane-enriched broccoli sprout extracts are ongoing in the US to examine the effects on atypical nevi and bladder and prostate cancer (10). A pilot study at our clinic has been initiated to evaluate the effects of sulforaphane-enriched broccoli sprouts on patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.…”

“…Vegetables of the cruciferous family such as broccoli seem to play a special role [17]. Crucifers produce mustard oils to protect themselves from pests.…”

“…Our recent results demonstrated that sulforaphane sensitizes pancreatic CSCs to chemotherapy by inhibiting their self-renewal potential, apoptosis resistance and NF-κB activity [8-11]. Based on several promising animal and epidemiological studies, prospective clinical trials with sulforaphane-enriched broccoli sprout extracts are ongoing in the U.S. to examine the effect on atypical nevi, bladder and prostate cancer [12], and a pilot study recently began at our clinic to evaluate the effect of this nutritional strategy on patients with advanced PDA.…”
