Sulfonated polyether ether ketone – sulfonated graphene oxide composite membranes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells

Abstract: Sulfonated polyether ether ketonesulfonated graphene oxide composite membranes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells have been prepared. Sulfonic acid functionalised graphene oxide nanosheets were incorporated into the sulfonated polyether ether ketone structure to interconnect the proton transport channels. The composite membranes were characterised by SEM, which revealed a uniform distribution of nanosheets into the polymer structure. FTIR showed the chemical interactions of functionalised graphene oxide with S… Show more

“…The peak assignments are consistent with the values reported in literature. 38,47 The results clearly indicate the formation of hydrogen bonds between the sulfonated acid groups in SPEEK and polar groups (-OH, -COOH) on GO, which may be benecial for the improvement of mechanical stability.…”

“…24,25 The proton conductivity of the SPEEK/PVDF-g-PSSA membranes at room temperature ranges from 6.54 × 10 -2 to 1.19 × 10 -1 S cm -1 (Fig. 26 The introduction of 5 wt. Notably, unlike other blend membranes which usually exhibit decreased proton conductivity by the incorporation of low IEC component, the SPEEK/PVDF-g-PSSA membrane exhibits enhanced proton conductivity at the PVDF-g-PSSA content of 5 wt.…”

“…The uniform distribution of GO within the polymer structure were confirmed by SEM, and functionalization between SGO and SPEEK was revealed by FTIR analysis. The composite membrane showed excellent proton conductivity (0.055 S cm −1 )and fuel cell performance measured at 80 °C and 30 % RH, compared with that of recast SPEEK [56].…”

“…The decrease in proton conductivity above 80 °C hinders the use of Nafion for large scale applications. Alternatives to Nafion membrane aromatic polymers, such as PEEK, PBI, and PSF, have received significant attention to meet the operating requirements for fuel cell applications [56] GO nanosheets have also been investigated as contributors to escalate the proton conductivity and methanol crossover resistance of these binary and ternary systems.…”
