Sulfonated graphene as water-tolerant solid acid catalyst

Abstract: Acid catalysts are essential for various chemical reactions in the industrial hydrocarbon chemistry. Sulfonated carbon has shown promising application as a new, cheap and environmentally friendly solid acid catalyst. In this study, we prepared the sulfonated graphene acid catalyst, and it was characterized by electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, solid state 13 C MAS NMR, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Catalytic hydrolysis of ethyl acetate shows that the sul… Show more

“…Pristine graphene had a ratio of 0.06 while the other three materials had ratios that ranged from 0.78 to 1.16. The disruption of the sp 2 carbon network by functionalizing with COOH, epoxide, hydroxyl and aryl SO 3 H groups contributes significantly to the intensity change in the D band [18]. 13 C MAS NMR was performed to further examine the chemical reactions involved in the synthesis from GO to SG (Fig.…”

“…These catalysts are known to be active in esterication [43][44][45][46][47] and hydrolysis reactions, 48,49 as well as in the production of acrylic acid from glycerol and acrolein. 50 Accordingly, we screened zeolites, commercial ion-exchange resins, (mixed) metal-oxides, and sulfonated carbonaceous and siliceous catalysts.…”

“…7 GO and reduced GO (RGO) were shown to inhibit growth of E. coli while showing insignificant cytotoxicity, thus leading to their incorporating into antibacterial paper. 8 SG acts as a water-stable catalyst for the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate, 9 whereas SGO is capable of dehydrating xylose to furfural in water. 10 Graphene has proven as a promising biocompatible scaffold that does not hamper the proliferation of human mesenchymal stem cells, but accelerates their specificd i fferentiation into bone cells.…”
