Concentrations of poly- and perfluorinated substances (PFASs) were determined in Hartbeespoort and Roodeplaat Dams, South Africa. Water samples were collected from the dams in February–March, and May–June, representing southern hemisphere summer and winter seasons, respectively. Solid phase extraction (SPE) was used to extract the analytes from the water samples and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) used for analysis. The mean PFAS concentrations detected ranged from 1.38–346.32 ng∙L-1 and 2.31–262.29 ng∙L-1 in the Hartbeespoort Dam and Roodeplaat Dam, respectively. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS) and perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA) were the most dominant PFASs detected. The PFAS concentrations detected were higher in summer than in winter, but the difference between seasons was not statistically significant (p = 1). Furthermore, the concentrations of short-chain PFASs were higher than the longer chains. Overall, the PFAS concentrations in the present study are comparable to those reported in other parts of South Africa, and also Ghana, higher than the concentrations reported in Uganda, Singapore, and Vietnam, and lower than those in Germany, Japan and China. The measured concentrations of PFOA and PFOS raise concerns of human exposure to these chemicals since they are above the USEPA advisory limit. This suggests that communities living within the vicinity of the dams are most likely to be exposed to these chemicals.

1 Quais agrotóxicos estão contaminando os solos brasileiros?Which pesticides are contaminating a brazilian soils? ¿Qué agrotoxicos contaminan los suelos brasileños? ResumoOs pesticidas têm uma importante função dentro da sociedade, entretanto seu uso excessivo pode causar problemas para a saúde do ambiente. Dentre estes problemas, a contaminação do Research, Society and Development, v. 9, n. 3, e114932569, 2020 (CC BY 4.0) | ISSN 2525-3409 | DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.33448/rsd-v9i3.2569 2 solo por agrotóxicos tem sido pouco discutida, fato preocupante, pois a qualidade do solo está relacionada diretamente ao funcionamento ecológico, a produção primária e a saúde humana.A contaminação do solo por agrotóxicos depende de diferentes fatores como os edáficos, propriedades do solo e da substância. O uso de agrotóxicos tem sido alvo de diferentes discussões mundiais, entretanto, estas discussões no cenário brasileiro tornam-se ainda mais necessárias devido ao vasto consumo e aplicação destas substâncias no país. Esta revisão apresenta uma visão crítica quanto a contaminação do solo por agrotóxicos dentro do território brasileiro utilizando como ferramentas o calculo do quociente de risco e comparação entre os valores de referência para solo canadenses e brasileiros. Vale ressaltar que apenas 12 unidades federativas brasileiras tinham dados disponíveis sobre concentrações de pesticidas em solos reais brasileiros (Amazonas, Bahia, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraná, Rondônia, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo). Os pesticidas mais detectados no solo e em maiores concentrações foram o Diclorodifeniltricloroetano, Hexaclorociclohexano e Hexaclorobenzeno. Em geral, os locais de estudo possuíam cenários de exposição com particularidades e não estavam relacionados ao atual uso de agrotóxicos no país. Neste contexto, é enfatizado a importância de estudos adicionais sobre resíduos de pesticidas em solos brasileiros. Palavras-chave: Monitoramento ambiental; Pesticidas; Defensivos agrícolas; Terra. Among these problems, soil contamination by pesticides has been little discussed, a matter of concern, since soil quality is directly related to ecological functioning, primary production and human health. Soil contamination by pesticides depends on different factors such as soil, soil and substance properties. The use of pesticides has been the target of different worldwide discussions, however, these discussions in the Brazilian scenario are even more necessary due to the vast consumption and application of these substances in the country. In 2009, sulfluramid, the main ingredient in toxic baits for leaf-cutting ant control, was included in Annex B of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. This resulted in interest in the use of entomopathogenic fungi such as Beauveria bassiana and Trichoderma harzianum for leaf-cutting ant control. The efficiency of these fungi in controlling these insects and the way that ants react individually or in group to the biological risks posed by these fungi is poorly understood. For this reason, we assessed the effects of B. bassiana and T. harzianum on Atta sexdens rubropilosa larvae, pupae and workers. Moreover, we investigated whether the number of contaminated individuals within a group has an influence in controlling the spread of fungi among workers. We found that the fungus T. harzianum showed high pathogenicity against A. sexdens rubropilosa larvae and pupae, leading to faster mortality and a survival rates. On the other hand, the fungus B. bassiana was responsible for causing faster worker mortality and lower survival rates. In addition, we observed that an increase in individuals contaminated with B. bassiana or T. harzianum in the group decreases its survival rate. The results support the hypothesis that entomopathogenic fungi are efficient in controlling leaf-cutting ants when contaminated workers are allocated to groups of healthy workers.
