Sulfated polysaccharide of Caesalpinia ferrea inhibits herpes simplex virus and poliovirus

Abstract: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is one of the most regular human pathogens, being a public health problem, and causal agent of several diseases. Poliovirus (PV) is an enteric virus and about 1% of infected individuals develop paralytic poliomyelitis due to viral invasion of the central nervous system and destruction of motor neurons. This work evaluated the activity of a sulfated polysaccharide of Caesalpinia ferrea (SPLCf) in HSV and PV replication. The antiviral effect of SPLCf at varying concentrations was teste… Show more

“…The replication of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and poliovirus (PV) were evaluated by sulfated polysaccharide (seeds) and the authors proved the inhibition of virus absorption in the stages after penetration and the synthesis of viral protein (Lopes et al, 2013). The cardiovascular effect of aqueous CE (stem bark) demonstrates that it induces hypotension associated with tachycardia in normotensive rats.…”

“…The antiviral activity of the SPLS Ap was determined by plaque reduction assay (PRA) according to Lopes et al [19]. HEp-2 cells grown in 24-well plates (TPP, CH) to 100% confluence were infected with PV (50 to 100 PFU) and treated simultaneously with varying concentrations of the SPLS Ap (0.78 to 100  μ g/mL).…”

“…Pentacyclic triterpenes isolated from birch bark (Betula species) extract of Eurasian and North America can inhibit HSV-1, especially acyclovir-sensitive and acyclovir-resistant clinical isolates of HSV (Heidary Navid et al, 2014). Sulfated polysaccharide from Caesalpinia ferrea can inhibit Poliovirus replication along with virus adsorption, steps after penetration and viral protein synthesis (Lopes et al, 2013). Oxyresveratrol, purified from Thai traditional medicinal plant Artocarpus lakoocha, has been shown to possess therapeutic effects in mice infected with HSV-1, by inhibiting early and late phase of viral DNA replication.…”
