Sulfated glycoproteins in the acquired pellicle and in plaque from Macaca fascicularis demonstrated with labeled sulfate

Abstract: – A sulfated glycoprotein was demonstrated in 2‐h pellicle material collected from monkeys. Furthermore, a sulfated macromolecule present in plaque extracts was identified as a sulfate glycoprotein by electrophoresis on cellulose acetate strips. The present data indicate that acidic proteins are selectively adsorbed to tooth surfaces in. vivo.

“…The results of previous analyses of acquired pellicle material collected in vivo are given in Table 2. The characteristic pattern with high amounts of serine, glycine and glutamic add found in our ptuified material can be recognized in the pellicle material collected from monkeys (17). The material analyzed by SoNju et al (20) and BELCOURT (3) do not show so high valties for serine, and BELCOURT'S data also show a higher value for proline.…”

“…A small component of basic protein was found. The basic component was, however, minute and was most likely houod through interaction with the anionic proteins present on the tooth or through binding directly with phosphate groups on the tooth surface (15,17,21).…”

“…The inidal preference of selected suggested by BERNARDI & KAWASAKI (2), calcium phosphate salts appears to be for that the amphoteric nature ofthe apadte acid compounds (5). Moreover, SONJU & surface makes it amenable to the up-ROLLA (19) and ROLLA SC EMBERY (15) found that a sulfated glycoprotein with blood group activity is present in the 2-h acquired pellicle. The role of the carbohydrate moieties of glycoproteins in the participation of cell-cell and cell-surface recognition and interaction phenomena has been highlighted by AsHWELL & MoRELL (1).…”
