In this study, the durability of movable weirs was improved by replacing steel clamping plates with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) material. Because the clamping plates of movable weirs are always in contact with water, the service life of weirs is reduced due to corrosion. Other environmental conditions also degrade movable weirs, such as exposure to continuous inundation, dry environments, repeated dry and wet conditions, and chemical environments. This study evaluated the absorption, fracture, and long-term aging properties of GFRP clamping plates for improved movable weirs. Absorption increased with immersion time in 60°C tap water, sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) solution, or calcium chloride (CaCl2) solution. However, the total absorption for 50 days and 100 days exposure was low, less than 0.50% and 0.62%, respectively. In fracture load tests, the GFRP clamping plates showed the largest reduction in strength after exposure to the CaCl2 solution; 70% and 67% of the control load were retained for exposures of 50 days and 100 days, respectively. After exposure to both tap water and the Na2SO4 solution, the GFRP clamping plates showed residual strengths of 77% and 69% after 50 days and 100 days exposure, respectively. The GFRP clamping plates showed 74% and 71% residual strength after exposure to repeated freeze–thaw environments for 50 days and 100 days, respectively, and 80% residual strength after exposure to all other environments for 50 days or 100 days. Both vertical and horizontal cracks were generated before fracture after exposure to an environment involving direct contact with moisture. Without moisture, only horizontal cracks were generated before fracture.

Fiber‐reinforced polymers composites (FRPs) are widely used in the industrial field, but their failure mechanism in extreme environments is usually unclear. In this work, the effect of high‐temperature, high‐pressure and H2S/CO2 extreme environment, similar to oil and gas field conditions, on raw fibers and unidirectional FRPs was investigated. The results showed that the glass fibers (GFs) suffered extensive degradation with the presence of metal sulfides in the precipitate, whereas basalt fibers (BFs) showed localized degradation. The flexural modulus of glass fiber reinforced polymer composite (GFRP) after degradation decreased by 28.8% compared to 25.6% for the basalt fiber reinforced polymer composite (BFRP). The interlaminar shear strength and flexural strength of the BFRP decreased by 20.3% and 24.7% respectively. In contrast, the GFRP had a reduction of 55.2% in flexural strength after degradation. Finite element method (FEM) analysis showed that the GFRP exhibited severe cohesive interface damage, while the primary failure mode of BFRP remained essentially unchanged with a combination of fiber damage and cohesive interface damage. This study confirms the superior degradation resistance of BF/BFRP over GF/GFRP in the simulated environment and highlights its promising application potential in oil and gas field service.Highlights Filament winding was used to fabricate the GFRP and BFRP. Revealed distinct surface morphology changes in GFs and BFs under simulated oil and gas field conditions. Superior degradation resistance of BFRP over GFRP was found in the extreme environment. Demonstrated superior chemical stability and mechanical properties of BFRP over GFRP. Used FEM to investigate the failure modes of FRPs before and after exposure.

Mechanical and Fracture Properties of Steel/GFRP Hybrid Panels for an Improved Moveable Weir after Exposure to Accelerated Natural Environmental Conditions

This study evaluated the performance of a hybrid panel in an improved moveable weir after exposure to accelerated environmental climate conditions. When exposed to a river environment, corrosion problems on improved moveable weir steel panels can occur. To address this, a hybrid panel with structure layering glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) panels on both sides of the steel panel was used. The steel was, therefore, not exposed to the outside. However, this hybrid panel is a structure that uses a mixture of two materials with different properties and there is the possibility of performance degradation when the GFRP composite material, i.e., the structure that wraps around the bond interface, and the steel panel are exposed to a river environment. Thus, we evaluated the durability of the hybrid panels by repeated exposure to long-term high temperatures, dry–wet environmental cycling, long-term freezing, and freeze–thaw cycling in an accelerated climate deterioration environment. In the flexural tests, the surface processing of the steel panel was shown to be important, with sand-blasted test specimens showing higher flexural strength. For the control specimens, the flexural strength decreased as the thickness of the GFRP panels increased. However, for the sand-blasted specimens, the flexural strength increased as the thickness of the GFRP panels increased. After exposure to accelerated climate deterioration, the flexural strength tests showed that the residual strength increased with panel thickness and that the residual strengths were greater for specimens incorporating sand-blasted steel panels. The results of our testing show that hybrid panels incorporating sand-blasted steel were adequate for use in improved moveable weirs.
