Sulfadiazine-selective determination in aquaculture environment: Selective potentiometric transduction by neutral or charged ionophores

Abstract: A B S T R A C TSolid-contact sensors for the selective screening of sulfadiazine (SDZ) in aquaculture waters are reported. Sensor surfaces were made from PVC membranes doped with tetraphenylporphyrin-manganese(III) chlo-ride, a-cyclodextrin, 13-cyclodextrin, or 1-cyclodextrin ionophores that were dispersed in plasticizer. Some membranes also presented a positive or a negatively charged additive. Phorphyrin -based sen-sors relied on a charged carrier mechanism. They exhibited a near-Nernstian response with slop… Show more

“…The overall procedure is inexpensive, expeditious and quick, having no environmental impact. A comparison of this method to previous recently published chemical sensing systems [32,35,[49][50][51][52] may be established by checking Table 1, highlighting that the herein proposed method is highly simple in terms of synthesis (summarized in Figure S16) and analytical application.…”

“…These are typically unable to fulfil the basic requirements of this strict control. There are also several electroanalytical methods described in the literature for the determination of sulphonamides, from which devices targeting sulfadiazine (SDZ) may be found in [30][31][32][33][34][35][36]. In general, these methods are more appropriate for local analysis, having suitable analytical features, but still require specific instrumentation.…”

“…A 0.2% molar ratio to ionophore was selected for this purpose, ensuring that the performance of the electrode would still be governed by the porphyrin-based ionophore. The cationic additive employed was TOABr, also following our previous studies with sulphonamide antibiotics [22]. The major improvement observed was a shift to a Nernstian behaviour, with a slope of -57.0 ± 1.63 mV/decade.…”

“…Taken (ng/mL) Found (ng/mL) Recovery (%) macrocyclic binds sulphonamide antimicrobial drugs [22] and it was therefore selected as a possible ligand, for concentrations of tiometric response. Carbonate, chlorate, chloride, chromate, cyanide, fluoride, hydrogenocarbonate, nitrate, nitrite, persulphate, phosphate, salicylate and sulphate were considered for this purpose.…”

“…Chemical sensors relying on charged and neutral carriers are also effective and have been proposed [12,13]. Both sensors offer suitable analytical features for conducting continuous analysis of the administered drug, ion exchangers being much less expensive sensory materials than neutral/charged carriers.…”
