Suitable design of a PMSG for a small-scale wind power generator

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to determine a suitable rotor structure with high-power performance for a small-scale wind power permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Five types of rotor structures are considered: a surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM), an inset PM, a tangentially-magnetized interior permanent magnet (IPM), a radially-magnetized IPM, and a V-shaped IPM. All have magnets of approximately the same size. They are analyzed by the 2-D finite element method (2D-FEM). From the results, the … Show more

“…Hence, using PMSG without a gearbox could be very useful and efficient exclusively for offshore applications, where less maintenance is required. 5,6 Generally, PMSG is used in small-scale wind power generation systems, 7 and because grid codes all over the world are stepped up, directdrive PMSG-based wind-turbine systems might be preferred in future over wind-turbine systems using doubly fed induction generators (DFIG). 3,8,9 On other hand, applications of power electronics converters (PECs) in the field of power systems are making a great impact on power conditioning especially in renewable energy systems integrated into the electrical grid.…”

“…By adjusting the generator speed at different working points according to speed-power characteristics of wind turbines, the maximum power point is obtained. In variable speed wind turbines systems, PMSG and induction generator (IG) are commonly used [7]- [11]. PMSG is used in small turbine systems due to its high-power density, high efficiency and reliable design.…”

“…Since 1996, PMSG has become more attractive than WRSG due to a decrease in the costs of permanent magnets and power converters [40]. At present, PMSG is known to be the prominent solution in directdrive, small-scale standalone WTs [22], [41]- [49]. Therefore, its possible configurations will be discussed in detail in chapter 2 (subsection 2.1.1).…”
