The application of fiber‐reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials and structures in various industrial sectors is expanding significantly to meet the rising demand for efficient, reliable, and functional building materials. Using FRPs can be an excellent strategy for enhancing railway structures and equipment because of their high strength‐to‐weight ratio, tailorable mechanical properties, and suitable long‐term characteristics. However, the railway industry appears to be hesitant to adopt composite materials compared to other transportation sectors like aerospace. It seems that there is still a long way to go before FRPs reach their full potential in railway applications. The goal of the current study is to explore the current uses of FRPs in the railway industry and the significant challenges, obstacles and difficulties that must be overcome to put FRP‐based concepts into practice for structural and rail vehicle applications.Highlights Applications of FRPs in railway vehicles and rail lines are reviewed. Main challenges for utilization of FRP in railway industry are studied. Future trends and applications of FRPs in the railway sector are introduced.

In the locomotive industry, the railway structural material is frequently subjected to harsh loads and vibration, and the current durability and vibration-resilience capabilities of the sleepers are insufficient. The aim of this paper is to fabricate a railway sleeper composites with enhanced mechanical and vibrational properties. A full factorial experimental design was followed in the composite fabrication with the rubber particles and fibreglass volume fraction ratio varied between 5 and 20% and 5 to 8% respectively. Modelling and optimisation of the mix design was then carried out using numerical modelling techniques. ANOVA tests were carried out to show the model's accuracy in predicting tensile strength, compression strength, flexural strength, and vibrational damping, as shown by R2 values of 60.69%, 86.60%, 60.05% and 81.41 %, respectively. However, the model was not reliable for the composite hardness which had an R2 value of 37.87%. The optimisation model developed in the study indicated that rubber particles of size of 150 µm at volume fraction of 7.48% and fibreglass volume fraction of 8% gave the optimum mechanical and vibrational properties.

Concretes have been the favoured material to make concrete railway sleepers due to better accessibility and weather compared to their timber counterparts. Railway sleepers are crucial infrastructure and 5% of concrete sleepers fail prematurely. Sleeper failure could result in catastrophic railway accidents. Hence, improvement is needed in the concrete sleeper mixes. Previous literature has identified two methods of improving concrete strength in concrete mixes with wastes, through replacement of concrete constituents or the use of alkali-activated materials. Use of wastes as partial concrete material replacements reduces the volume of concrete materials while alkali-activated material forms a concrete-like compound that eliminates the use of cement. These methods improve the strength performance and sustainability aspects of the concrete. While many studies have been conducted on these two types of sustainable concrete, their application in concrete railway sleepers has not been investigated. Thus, this paper looks to review the two different types of sustainable concretes through some previous literature that has been conducted on its application in concrete railway sleepers as well as those that have yet to be studied. Ultimately, identifying the best sustainable materials for concrete railway sleepers.
