“…It is worth noting that the novelty of partitioning of metal cations to borate-rich environment applies to other non-silicate systems, for example B 2 O 3 -TeO 2 -La 2 O 3 [45]. In this case, microphase enriched in B and La was found with the TEM method and the dissolution of La cations in the melt led to increase of the tendency for formation of super structural units containing BO 3 and BO 4 groups based on infra-red spectroscopic study [46]. We will adopt the partitioning scheme in the next section discussing how the baseline composition and the dissolution of Gd 2 O 3 influence the (Gd, B)-rich phase formation and agglomeration in each system.…”

“…A study of phonon side band (PSB) for Eu-doped Na 2 O-B 2 O 3 -SiO 2 glasses by Gatterer et al [46] showed that, for Na 2 O/B 2 O 3 from 0 up to about 1/3, Eu cations preferentially partitioned into the borate-rich environments, approximately 95% or greater. The concentration or a percentage of Eu cations in the silicate-rich portion of the glass, however, increased (not exceeding 50% Eu) as Na 2 O/B 2 O 3 increased above 1/3 [46].…”

“…These results were reinforced by Judd-Ofelt calculations. The Judd-Ofelt (JO) theory [8,9] has been widely used to study the environment surrounding RE ions in glass [10][11][12][13][14][15]. The theory gives the Judd-Ofelt parameters O 2 , O 4 and O 6 , from which radiative properties can be obtained.…”
