Suitability of five plant species extracts for their compatibility with indigenous Beauveria bassiana against Aphis gossypii Glov. (Hemiptera: Aphididae)

Abstract: Background The cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glov. (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a major insect pest on a wide range of plants that causes high damage and transmits plant viruses. This study was carried out to evaluate an indigenous isolate, Beauveria bassiana (Bb), and extracts of 5 plant species: Psiadia penninervia, Pulicaria crispa, Euryops arabicus, Salvia officinalis, and Ochradenus baccatus against A. gossypii, as individual and combined treatments to estimate their compatibility under labor… Show more

“…By producing secondary metabolites including phenols, quinone flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, and tannins, plants defend themselves against herbivores and microorganisms (Sayed et al, 2021). Botanical pesticides are pesticides derived from plant-based ingredients that are easily decomposed in nature, so they are safe for humans and do not pollute the environment (Tripathy et al, 2022).…”

“…Besides this, the high input cost of insecticides and all legal restrictions have focused on using an alternative approach to control insect pests 11 , 12 . In the previous years, an alternative bio-control method is in specifically, the use of entomopathogens has emerged 13 , 14 . Entomopathogenic fungi [EPF] have exclusive characterisations that enable them to be the potential bio-control agents of insect pests.…”

“…These compounds are non-lethal to predators, parasitoids and mammals (Scott et al, 2003). In recent years, there have been many studies on the insecticidal activities of essential oils and their components in plants (Isman & Miresmailli, 2011;Ntalli & Menkissoglu-Spiroudi, 2011;Regnault-Roger et al, 2012;Miresmailli & Isman, 2014;Pavela & Benelli, 2016;Chaubey, 2019;Feng et al, 2020;Gaur & Kumar, 2020;Sayed et al, 2021). According to studies conducted in recent years, plant species belonging to 60 families with insecticidal effects can be used as biopesticides (Sukh & Opender, 2017;Isman, 2006).…”
