Suitability of anodic stripping voltammetry for routine analysis of venous blood from raptors

Abstract: Lead (Pb) poisoning is a significant threat faced by raptors. Hence, rapid Pb diagnosis has become a priority during the admission of raptors in wildlife recovery centers, and bench‐top analyzers, such as LeadCare II ®, are routinely employed for this purpose. However, this device has been designed for conducting analyses of human blood Pb levels (BLLs), and the validity of this methodology for whole blood from raptors has, to date, rarely been assessed. In addition, a recent recall by the US Food and Drug Adm… Show more

“…A LeadCare II device (Model: LeadCare Analyzer, ESA Inc., Serial Number: LC1722) was used for the procedure. This test presented an overall sensitivity of 71.8% and a positive predictive value of 76.3% ( Gonzalez et al, 2019 ). The fingertip was thoroughly wiped using an alcohol swab, and upon lancing, a total of 50 μl of capillary blood was taken.…”

“…Blood lead concentration values were moderate when compared with other European populations of raptors, such as the griffon vulture (Carneiro et al 2015;Mateo-Tomás et al 2016;González et al 2017González et al , 2018Rodríguez-Ramos et al 2008), and North American species, such as turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) and American black vultures (Coragyps atratus), species classically considered as primary scavengers (Palmer et al 2022). Golden eagles, an opportunistic scavenger from North America, have a higher exposure, with clinical intoxications (Domenech et al 2021).…”

“…Information on lead exposure in Bonelli's eagle is scarce (Ortiz-Santaliestra et al 2015, González et al 2018, Descalzo et al 2021; however, lead concentration can be high in Bonelli's eagles even if the species rarely eats common sources of lead for raptors, such as carrion or aquatic birds (Gil-Sánchez et al 2018).…”
