Suicide Rates After Discharge From Psychiatric Facilities

Abstract: The immediate postdischarge period is a time of marked risk, but rates of suicide remain high for many years after discharge. Patients admitted because of suicidal ideas or behaviors and those in the first months after discharge should be a particular focus of concern. Previously admitted patients should be able to access long-term care and assistance.

“…Some of this increased mortality can be explained by suicides,3 but it is generally believed that the majority of the premature deaths of mentally ill people are from natural causes 1. However, suicide rates are alarmingly high in the year after discharge from psychiatric hospitals,4 but the relative contribution of suicide and natural death to premature mortality in this period is under-researched.…”

“…Building on the above work, there is a need to develop and test psychotherapies that are specifically targeted to reduce suicidal ideation and other suicide risk factors among older adults [59–60], particularly for those at high suicide risk such as recently hospitalized patients and those with treatment resistant depression [61]. A recent pilot by Heisel at al [62] adapted Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) for older adults at risk of suicide.…”
