Suicide in Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province: decade 1990-2000

Abstract

The present study means to provide a description of the suicide phenomenon, in a specific geographical and cultural context, in order to point out the problematic sides in a diagnostic-clinical point of view that may be an incentive to a larger preventive care.

Differences in suicide behaviour in the elderly: a study in two provinces of Northern Italy

“…Living in the province of Novara seems to have a protective role against suicide both in people aged 65-74 and in people aged 75 and over. In one of our earlier studies (Torre et al, 2002a) we noticed that in the province of Verbania the suicide rates were higher than in Northern Italy, reaching statistical significance, but we did not investigate this phenomenon among the elderly. Now it is possible to underline that people aged 75 and over have a great risk of suicide, 50% more than people of the same age group living in North West Italy (SMR 1.56, 95% CI 1.16-2.06).…”
