“…Living in the province of Novara seems to have a protective role against suicide both in people aged 65-74 and in people aged 75 and over. In one of our earlier studies (Torre et al, 2002a) we noticed that in the province of Verbania the suicide rates were higher than in Northern Italy, reaching statistical significance, but we did not investigate this phenomenon among the elderly. Now it is possible to underline that people aged 75 and over have a great risk of suicide, 50% more than people of the same age group living in North West Italy (SMR 1.56, 95% CI 1.16-2.06).…”

“…The province of Verbania has been one of the Italian provinces with the highest suicide rates over this last decade (ISTAT, 1990(ISTAT, -2000, a fact that we previously investigated but with no regard to the elderly (Torre et al, 2002a;Torre et al, 2002b). The population of the two provinces is not homogeneously distributed for the morphologic and economic layout of the land: flat areas intensively exploited for agriculture and industry (which prevail the province of Novara) are opposed to scarcely inhabited mountain districts (which prevail in Verbania).…”
