Suicide behaviour and arsenic levels in drinking water: a possible association?

Abstract: BackgroundA considerable part of the global population is exposed to arsenic-contaminated drinking water which is the main source of inorganic arsenic(As) exposure in humans. Arsenic exposure interferes with the action of enzymes, essential cations, and transcriptional events in cells throughout the body, and a multitude of multisystemic non-cancer effects might ensue. The aim of our review was to evaluate the effects of arsenic contamination in drinking water on suicides rates.MethodsA systematic literature s… Show more

“…Geogenically, some PTEs, in particular As, may be released into groundwater, which occurs from weathering processes, geothermal water, and vulcanisation [72][73][74]. Geogenic sources contribute to the contamination of groundwater with PTEs; this groundwater is used as drinking water in many countries, thus posing a health risk to millions of people worldwide [75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84]. Anthropogenically, the industrial, municipal, and farm wastewaters are the main sources of PTE-contaminated water [17,70,71].…”

“…In fish and seaweed, arsenic is found in the form of arsenolipids and could be added to hot tea or food to kill people [3]. It can also be used in suicides [4]. The metal is commonly found as trivalent arsenite and pentavalent arsenate.…”

“…The main source of arsenic toxicity is the drinking water contaminated with an inorganic form [2]. In fish and seaweed arsenic is found in the form of arsenolipids and could be added to hot tea or food to dispatch victims [3] and people used it in suicides [4]. The metal commonly found in two oxidation states trivalent arsenite and pentavalent arsenate.…”
