Suicidal Presentations to Emergency Departments in a Large Australian Public Health Service over 10 Years

Abstract: This paper presents trends and characteristics for 32,094 suicidal presentations to two Emergency Departments (EDs) in a large health service in Australia across a 10-year period (2009–2018). Prevalence of annual suicidal presentations and for selected groups of consumers (by sex, age groups, and ethnicity) was determined from a machine learning diagnostic algorithm developed for this purpose and a Bayesian estimation approach. A linear increase in the number of suicidal presentations over 10 years was observe… Show more

“…To overcome this challenge, a machine learning approach was used to develop software for the identification of suicidal presentations, titled Searching EDIS for Records of Suicidal Presentations (SERoSP). SERoSP has proven to be a time- and cost-effective solution to obtaining data on suicidal presentations required for the evaluation of the SPP (Stapelberg et al, 2020).…”

“…Cases were identified from ED administrative data through relevant diagnoses, presenting problems and keywords, followed by a manual investigation of triage narratives to exclude false positive cases, such as non‐deliberate injuries or poisonings. The numbers of ED visits between January and August 2020 were compared with the projected numbers, calculated by applying an annual increase of 13.5% 4 to presentations during the same period in 2019.…”
