Objective: A multivariate model was developed incorporating various sociodemographic, social-environmental, and social-psychological factors in an attempt to predict suicidal ideation among Canadian youth. The main research objective sought to determine what socially-based factors elevate or reduce suicidal ideation within this population. Methods: Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Children and YouthCycle 5 (2003), a cross-sectional sample of 1,032 was used to empirically identify various social determinants of suicidal ideation among youth between the ages of 12 and 15. Results: Results reveal statistically significant correlations between suicide ideation and some lesser examined socially-based measures. In particular, ability to communicate feelings, negative attachment to parents/guardians, taunting/bullying or abuse, and presence of deviant peers were significant predictors of suicidal ideation. As expected, depression/anxiety, gender, and age were also correlated with thoughts of suicide. Conclusions: Research findings should help foster a better understanding towards the social elements of suicide and provide insight into how suicide prevention strategies may be improved through an increased emphasis on substance use education, direct targeting of dysfunctional families and deviant peer groups, and exploring more avenues of selfexpression for youth.

ResumoO divórcio é marcado por mudanças e a necessidade de reorganização familiar. A literatura tem abordado as implicações deste processo no desenvolvimento dos adolescentes, nomeadamente a existência de aspetos como a qualidade da vinculação aos pais que potenciam o desenvolvimento de coping e protegem face a fatores de risco. O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar o processo de individuação face às fi guras parentais, bem como o seu papel no desenvolvimento de estratégias de coping em adolescentes de diferentes confi gurações familiares (tradicionais e divorciadas). A amostra foi composta por 399 participantes, com idades entre 15 e 18 anos, de ambos os gêneros, e provenientes de famílias tradicionais e divorciadas/separadas. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram associações entre a individuação parental e o coping. Verifi cou-se ainda que a confi guração familiar não apresenta um efeito moderador na associação entre a individuação parental e o coping, sendo que o divórcio parece não se constituir per si um fator que infl uencia necessariamente de forma negativa o desenvolvimento do coping em adolescentes, destacando-se a importância da individuação parental neste processo. Individuation and Coping in Adolescents from Traditional and Divorced Families AbstractDivorce is marked by change and the need of family reorganization. The literature has addressed the implications of this process in the development of adolescents, namely the existence of aspects like quality of attachment with parents that improve the development of coping and protect from risk factors. This study aims to analyse the process of individuation to parental fi gures, as well as, its role in the development of coping strategies in adolescents from different family confi gurations (traditional and divorced). The sample comprised 399 participants aged 15 to 18 from both genders and from intact and divorced/separated families. The results showed associations between parental individuation and coping. It has been found that familiar confi guration doesn´t have a moderating effect on the association between parental individuation and coping, and that divorce doesn´t seem itself a negatively infl uences the development of coping in adolescents, highlighting the importance of parental individuation in this process.

Adolescent suicide, which has been ranked among the top 10 causes of death in the world, is an issue of increasing concern to school psychologists, educators, and parents. Here an ecological approach is proposed to enhance our understanding of how personal, interpersonal, and sociocultural factors contribute to the increased risk for suicide among adolescents. The ecological approach allows exploration of how adolescent suicide is determined by multiple factors related to the adolescent's personal history or ontogenic development (e.g., depression), the influences of those individuals with whom adolescents have immediate contact with, or the microsystems (e.g., family and school), the larger social units, or the exosystems, that indirectly influence adolescents (e.g., media), and the larger culture or macrosystems (e.g., cultural differences in attitudes about suicide). In this article the interaction of several factors within and between the permeable boundaries of each of the layers of the ecological paradigm is also highlighted. Finally, examples of intervention and prevention strategies at each level of the system are set forth.
