Psychological stress can be viewed as occurring when demands exceed an individual's adaptive capacity. Burnout is an occupational syndrome defined by three dimensions, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and feelings of low personal accomplishment. Factors related to the nature of the physiotherapy practice, in which health care is provided to patients under painful experiences and chronical conditions, to aspects related to emotional fatigue brought by interpersonal exchanges or physical exhaustion due to staff shortage, within an increasingly demanding health care system, expose physiotherapists to a higher risk of burnout and few studies have examined burnout in this specific setting. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of burnout in Portuguese physiotherapists and to explore possible associations between burnout and demographic and work-related variables. Significant but weak association was found between age and emotional exhaustion, and between clinical experience and emotional exhaustion and global burnout score. Weak association was also found between the number of treated patients daily and daily working hours and physical fatigue and global burnout. Workload was associated with significantly higher scores of physical fatigue, cognitive weariness and global burnout. The prevalence of burnout was not high but significant differences were found in the prevalence of physical fatigue between the group with low workload and high workload. Emotional exhaustion was the most relevant predictor of the global burnout score. In conclusion, the results suggest that the prevalence of burnout in Portuguese physiotherapists is not very high, however, workload seems to place these professionals at a higher risk of developing burnout.

Medication Errors in Ethiopia: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: The caution of medication prescription and administration are the main physician and nursing services though there was no study to show medication error at the nation level in Ethiopia. Therefore, we estimated the national prevalence of medication errors. Methods: A systematic review of studies searched in PubMed, Scopus, African Journal of Online, and Google Scholar was done. Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale was used to assess the quality status of the included studies. We employed Galbraith plot and Egger’s regression test to assess publication bias. The national prevalence of medication errors was estimated using a random-effects model meta-analysis. Moreover, subgroup analysis and meta-regression analyses were done to explore the reason of statistical heterogeneity.Results: A total of 14 studies with 5,552 administered medications and 5,661 prescription sheets were included. The overall prevalence of medication error in Ethiopia was 57.6% (95% CI: 46.2, 69.0). The pooled burden of medication administration and prescription error was 58.4% (95% CI: 51.4, 65.5) and 55.8% (95% CI: 27.0, 84.6), respectively. Omission error (38%), wrong dose (38.5%), and the wrong combination of drugs (28.7%) were highly reported types of prescription errors, whereas missed doses (57.0%), technical errors (47.0%), wrong time (35.0%), and wrong dose (30.0%) were frequently observed medication administration errors.Conclusions: Medication errors were very common in Ethiopian hospitals whereby at least one out of two medications were wrongly prescribed and administered. Our review provided a shred of up-to-date evidence for clinicians, regional, and national healthcare policymakers to appraise and improve the quality of hospitals’ inpatient care.Trail registration: The protocol is registered in the Prospero database with a registration number of CRD42019138125.

Santrauka. Kiekvienos asmens sveikatos priežiūros įstaigos (toliau -ASPĮ) tikslas suteikti saugias ir kokybiškas paslaugas pacientams, tačiau kartais teikiant sveikatos priežiūros(toliau -SP) paslaugas susiduriama su nepageidaujamais įvykiais (toliau -NĮ), kurių nepavyksta išvengti. NĮ gali pakenkti pacientui ir sukelti negrįžtamas sveikatos problemas, todėl pacientų sauga ir NĮ medicinoje išlieka globalinė problema visame pasaulyje. Pastaruoju metu mūsų šalyje ir pasaulyje gausėja tyrimų, įrodančių, kaip užtikrinti pacientų saugą (toliau -PS), kaip teikti kokybiškas paslaugas SP sektoriuje ir sumažinti NĮ skaičių. Europos Taryba 2009 m. pateikė rekomendacijas, kaip tobulinti PS, tačiau 2014 m. atlikto tyrimo rezultatai rodo, kad NĮ išlieka ASPĮ problema Europos Sąjungos (toliau -ES) šalyse. 1 Kiek vėliau, 2017 m., nuspręsta, kad pateiktos rekomendacijos nacionaliniu lygiu nepakankamai įgyvendintos. Europos Komisija įvertino, kad vis dar yra trūkumų: bendradarbiavimo stoka tarp ES šalių, saugos kultūros įgyvendinimo, žinių ir įgūdžių analizuojant NĮ trūkumai. 2 Straipsnyje analizuojama, kaip sekasi Lietuvoje įgyvendinti NĮ politiką, kodėl Lietuvoje ir ES šalyse patvirtintas privalomų registruoti nepageidaujamų įvykių sąrašas, tačiau šių įvykių registravimas vyksta vangiai, apie daugumą jų nepranešama, slepiamas jų realus skaičius ir dažnis, neanalizuojamos priežastys.
