Sudden death of feedlot cattle.

Abstract: Sudden deaths or the sudden death syndrome are perceived as major concerns in cattle feedlots because most of these deaths occur in cattle near market weight. Etiology and preventive measures are poorly defined. The current literature indicates that sudden deaths are associated most commonly with digestive upsets. Death is thought to be the result of interactions between factors including acidosis, bloat, and endotoxemia. Trauma, peracute interstitial pneumonia, and other identifiable events are specifically d… Show more

“…Deaths occur suddenly and unexpectedly, i.e. there are no preceding clinical signs (Pierson et al 1976, Glock & DeGroot 1998. Under these circumstances necropsy is the only tool available and the lack of clinical signs and epidemiological data do not allow an accurate diagnosis.…”

“…A result of 9.13mmol lactate/L blood found in cattle in the traditional feedlot system was potentially dangerous, being a predisposing factor for systemic metabolic acidosis (Glock & Degroot 1998), and could be the cause of the sudden death cases. During data collection it was observed that several animals were seen separated from the others, but with no changes or signs of any problems and, after a certain time, were found dead by staff members.…”

“…Indeed, there are examples of breakdown in the field when clostridial vaccines are used in cattle (Glock and Degroot 1998). A first difficulty is the absence of an experimental model of the enterotoxaemia syndrome (Manteca and others 2001).…”

“…An over-population of LAB decreases pH, fiber digestion, and VFA production and has the potential to release endotoxins . Ultimately, these changes can cause acidosis, colic, and/or endotoxemia that can lead to laminitis or even instant death (Glock and DeGroot, 1998).…”
