Sudden Death from Primary Cerebral Melanoma: Clinical Signs and Pathological Observations

Abstract: Primary cerebral tumors rarely provoke sudden death. The incidence is often underestimated with reported frequencies in the range of 0.02 to 2.1% in medicolegal autopsy series. Furthermore, primary cerebral melanoma is an uncommon neoplasm. It represents approximately 1% of all melanoma cases and 0.07% of all brain tumors. This neoplasm is very aggressive, and its annual incidence is about 1 in 10 million people. In the present study, a 20-year-old male was admitted to hospital with vomiting, headache, paresth… Show more

“…14,56 This is particularly essential if the cause of donor death is due to intracerebral hemorrhage because there is a possibility of missed diagnosis of melanomas as in Buell et al 27 and Stefankov a et al 30 Several reports mention melanoma developing in numerous organ recipients from donors who died of intracerebral hemorrhage with no history of melanoma. 57,58 One cause of intracerebral hemorrhage is cerebral melanoma, 59 hence a possible explanation for these could be that cerebral melanoma in those donors were transmitted to the recipients. There have been some advances with utilizing medical imaging and serology to investigate for malignancy in donors; however, there remains a role for autopsy to detect melanoma.…”

“…It was a useful tool, which should be applied to the routine autopsy protocol [ 32 , 33 , 34 ]. Autopsy plays a crucial role in identifying the cause of death beyond any doubt [ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ]. Many unexpected deaths are currently associated with cardiovascular diseases and in many cases without any type of confirmation.…”
